Committees at a Glance
Welcome to the colombo opeterad Model United Nations (COMUN) Committees Page! Explore the diverse range of committees that engage in thought-provoking discussions, tackle global challenges, and foster diplomatic relations.
General Assemblies
General Assembly 3 (GA3)
The Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) deals with human rights, humanitarian affairs and social affairs.
The mandate, in addition to the aforementioned issues, also considers issues relating to the advancement of rights for women, the protection of children and indigenous populations, and the treatment of refugees. Generally referred to as a novice committee for new delegates.
World Health Assembly (WHA)
The World Health Assembly is a UN agency that works to promote health and safety in the Global Sphere. As the directing Health Authority of the UN, this year’s rendition of the WHO at COMUN would include both countries and Non-governmental Organisations as representatives.
Despite being the top decision-making body of the World Health Organisation causing it to focus on the financial aspect of the global health sphere, this year’s rendition of the WHA will adopt a narrower mandate to prioritise specifically health-related content. This committee can also be referred to as a novice committee.
INTERPOL General Assembly
(IGA)
The General Assembly of the International Criminal Police Organization focuses on three major areas of transnational crime: terrorism, cybercrime, and organized crime.
The matrix would be largely unchanged with 196 member states, and its broad mandate and novel simulation make it approachable to delegates across the spectrum. It would act as a departure from the established norms of Colombo Model UN, whilst providing an additional spark of innovation to boost interest from participating schools.
World Intellectual Property Organization General Assembly (WIPO GA)
The World Intellectual Property Organisation exists to promote and protect intellectual property across the world by cooperating with countries as well as international organizations. Activities conducted by the organization include shaping international IP rules, providing global services to register and protect IP, and connecting IP through uniform infrastructure standards.
WIPO Assemblies bring together all 193 member states to discuss the progress of the organization and discuss future policy directions. This would mark the first simulation of WIPO in 5 years and would mark a new direction for the organization of General Assemblies
Specialized Committees
Climate and Economic Resilience Forum
(CERF)
The CERF is dedicated to exploring strategies that nations can employ to address the complex interplay between climate change and economic stability. It allows delegates to think about sustainability from a multi-dimensional perspective by encouraging them to delve into the intersection between environmental and financial policy.
This committee will see delegates representing UN member states, particularly those who show heightened vulnerability to climate change. Representatives may also include prominent NGOs, international financial institutions, and other relevant stakeholders.
Global eSports Federation (GeF)
This committee oversees the rise of eSports as a revolutionary global phenomenon and addresses issues pertaining to the rapidly evolving world of competitive gaming and eSports.
The committee may deal with pressing matters such as the ergonomic practices concerning professional gaming, intellectual property rights in eSports, and the inclusion of eSports in the Olympics. Delegations for this committee will include representatives from each member state including but not limited to their national eSports federations, gaming companies, coaches, and sponsors.
Intelligence Sharing Coalition
(ISC)
A security-oriented committee that brings together representatives from various national intelligence agencies. This fictional simulation would serve as a launchpad for intelligence agencies from around the world to collaborate on crucial international security threats, exchange vital information, and develop frameworks for joint action.
The membership of each country will be represented by its chief intelligence officer or a designated senior intelligence official from that organization. For instance, the United Kingdom may be represented by a delegate of the MI6, India by a delegate of the Research and Analysis Wing, and the United States by a CIA director. This is a top-tier committee strictly for experienced delegates only.
International Press Corps
(IPC)
The IPC is a holistic and dynamic committee that acts as a voice for international media. This committee comprises a group of journalists who report on various proceedings in debate ranging from reporting and investigating crucial parts of the committee to writing editorials and news articles and crafting exemplary press statements. Membership for IPC delegates only extends to news agencies. Delegates in this committee will gain a deeper understanding of media literacy and the role of journalism in diplomacy.
